Wham! Bam! Poetry Slam!

Snite Museum of Art in South Bend, Indiana

I recently went to my first poetry slam.  It was held at the Snite Museum of Art in South Bend, Indiana.  I froze and it was completely awkward, and yes, very uncomfortable, but I did see and meet some incredibly talented artists.  Here are some of the videos that came out of that event.  Thankfully none are me freezing like a deer in the headlights, they are all awesome.  I look forward to the next slam, and I have been told it is being planned right now.

Cristin O’Keefe Aptowicz “Notes on Rejection”

I just received my first two rejections on the same day, so I now can really relate to this.  I was told “unfortunately at this time we have not selected your writing…” and “keep submitting,” and then I found this video.  I know it happens.  It is a rite of passage.  So it is cool.  So for everyone else out there who knows this feeling or is afraid they will die, you won’t, but you may find yourself overindulging in Chinese food.  Or maybe that is just me.

Marty McConnell performs “Frida Kahlo to Marty McConnell”

In honor of National Poetry month I have decided Re-blog one (or more) WordPress (or other) poets a day.  I am not very good with rules.  So with that in mind I would like to introduce you to an other.  I recently attended a slam poetry workshop at Notre Dame University taught by Marty McConnel.  It was incredible and inspiring.  She spoke about the poetry and the performance.  I really had never realized how much was going on in the Slam world.  This was one of those moments when I thought, “YES, YES, YES, … I LOVE THIS.”   So In honor of National Poetry month and 6 year olds everywhere who change the rules to the game on a dime, I would like to show you a video of a poet every day in April, starting with the very dynamic Marty McConnell.  Please check out her incredible Bio at her website.  The workshop I attended was free, and she may be coming to venue near you.  If she does, GO, you will not be disappointed.
