Through The Glass Darkly

I reworked Love letter #1 and turned it into this.  This was what I was going to read, but after three lines I froze.  I froze and stood their silent until the judge said “time,” about five times.  So I stood there for 3 minutes.  Wow.  That was a bit embarrassing, but it was actually great.  I got off that stage and got about 20 hugs and everyone clapped.  I also feel like I still accomplished something cool, and now I have a great story, and I met allot of amazing and very supportive artists.  So my next reading is April 28th.  I know I can do it and have my paper before me if I need it, but I do not think I will.  So that went well, depending on how you look at it.  I think it was probably more painful for the people watching then for me.  So there you go, I am a performance artist.  Sort of.

  5. Like you say, it’s a great story to tell. But now you know what it’s like to be up there… you’ll be ready for it next time. Your reading was gorgeous – you have a great voice.

I’ve never read my work in front of people but I do speak in public a lot… I think the only thing you have to remember is not to rush it once you’re up there (even writing ‘breath’ in between some of the lines can be a big help!).

I’m so glad you read it for us! It is a beautiful poem, read with perfect pace and in a captivating voice.
You are no ‘Betty Generic.’ You are YOU and have so much to offer. We know it, I hope you know it and soon your live audiences will know it. With love and total understanding from Ireland, jx

  8. Excellent reading, you did great just by standing up and doing your reading. I’m sure you will get better and better the more you do it.

Perhaps bring a copy of this great recording and stand there silently smiling as it plays while you are on the stage. Now that would be cool…
